چکیده

We investigated an old-growth oak-shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) stand of high ecological integrity in east-central Oklahoma located west of the continuous native distribution of shortleaf pine. With the exception of an abundance of shortleaf pine, the basal area (17.2 m/ha), density (559.6 trees/ha), and species composition of this unmanaged stand is similar to other old hardwood forests in the Cross Timbers ecoregion. Tree-ring dating indicates that the oldest post oak (Quercus stellata) and shortleaf pine sampled in Shortleaf Canyon were 262 and 230 yr old, respectively. Dendrochronology indicated that drought-related disturbances contributed to several episodic pulses of natural regeneration of shortleaf pine at this site. Coupled with local historical documentation and regional paleoecological evidence, the absence of older pines at this isolated site suggests that P. echinata may have naturally colonized Shortleaf Canyon recently, perhaps during the last 250 yr.

Characterization of an Old-growth Forest in the Cross Timbers of Oklahoma

INTRODUCTION Many cross timbers forests in central Oklahoma were neither extensively logged nor farmed and may contain some of the largest tracts of old-growth forests, particularly those dominated by oak, in eastern North America (Therrell and Stahle 1998). We studied a 90 ha old-growth forest in Osage County, Oklahoma which is one of the few designated forest preserves in the cross timbers. O...

Nonlinear mixed modeling of basal area growth for shortleaf pine

Mixed model estimation methods were used to fit individual-tree basal area growth models to tree and stand-level measurements available from permanent plots established in naturally regenerated shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.) even-aged stands in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma in the USA. As a part of the development of a comprehensive distance-independent individual-tree shortleaf ...

A Survival Model for Shortleaf Pine Trees Growing in Uneven-aged Stands’

A survival model for shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.) trees growing in uneven-aged stands was developed using data from permanently established plots maintained by an industrial forestry company in western Arkansas. Parameters were fitted to a logistic regression model with a Bernoulli dependent variable in which ‘1” represented individual tree survival and “0” represented individual tree ...

A Survival Model for Individual Shortleaf Pine Trees in Even-Aged Natural Stands

-A model was developed that predicts the probability of survival for individual shortleaf pine (Pinus echinatu Mill.) trees growing in even-aged natural stands. Data for model development were obtained from the first two measurements of permanently established plots located in natural ly occurring short leaf pine forests on the Ouachita and Ozark National Forests in western Arkansas and eastern...

Overstory Species Composition, Structure, and Conservation Challenges of a Mature, Natural-Origin Pine Stand After Decades of Management

This study provides a preliminary assessment of 4 compartments on the Crossett Experimental Forest (CEF) being restored to old-growth-like conditions. After being partially cleared for agriculture or lumbered in the late 1910s, Compartments 1, 2, 11, and 12 were included in a combination of pulpwood-thinning and uneven-aged cutting-cycle studies for the next 50 y. Today, these compartments are ...
